Prophylaxis is commonly referred to as a professional tooth cleaning. It is an important dental treatment for stopping the progression of gum disease and gingivitis.
A prophylaxis is a deep clean of your teeth and gum line. This cleaning is done every six months to prevent gum and periodontal disease - a bacterial infection of the gums. If left untreated, the bacteria will spread to your jawbone and can cause tooth loss.
Is prophylaxis right for you?
During your first visit to our practice, we will do everything we can to help you feel comfortable and at ease. We will discuss your medical history, current medications, and daily habits. We will review your treatment plan and recommended services and answer any questions that you may have.
We will examine your teeth, gums, and mouth. They will check for signs of decay, gingivitis, and other problems. We will discuss any findings with you and answer your questions. After your overall exam, our dentist may recommend dental prophylaxis or teeth cleaning. This cleaning is designed to remove plaque, tartar, and other debris from your teeth. The cleaning will help to prevent future decay, cavities, and gum disease.
We will recommend prophylaxis if:
- You have signs of gum disease, such as red or swollen gums, loose teeth, or chronic bad breath.
- You have signs of tooth decay, such as stains or pits on your teeth.
- You are prone to tartar buildup.
- You smoke or chew tobacco.
- You use certain medications, such as tetracycline.
- You have had recent dental work, such as a filling or crown.
What happens during prophylaxis?
Prophylaxis involves removing plaque and tartar from your teeth. Our dental hygienist will use specialized tools to remove the buildup from your teeth. The ultrasonic scaling appliance will be placed near the tartar deposits, which dislodges them effortlessly. A jet of water combined with it washes away the removed bacterial deposits. You may also be given the opportunity to receive fluoride treatment.
